He has strived to be a community servant through 7 years as Alderman and 13 years as Mayor, many years as an Elder and later as Clerk of Session at Black Mountain Presbyterian Church, his co-founding the Black Mountain Counseling Center in 2007, his co-founding the Black Mountain - Swannanoa Valley Community Endowment Fund in 1999, and his leadership among many other community organizations and non-profits (see more here). Mike attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, from which he received two degrees. He attended UNC, as a Morehead Scholar, for his undergraduate studies and graduated in 1974. He then continued his studies at the UNC School of Law from which he graduated in 1977. After graduation, Mike returned to the Swannanoa Valley and practiced law at Brock, Begley, & Drye before founding Begley Law Firm in 1985. Mike is a licensed member of the North Carolina State Bar, and a member of the North Carolina Bar Association. From 1980-1983, he served on the North Carolina Bar Association Real Estate Section Council as Chair of the Real Estate Unauthorized Practice of Law Sub-Committee and as Chair of the Uniform Computerized Indexing Standards Sub-Committee. Mike is also a member of the 28th Judicial District Bar Association. During his free time, Mike enjoys keeping up with Tar Heel sports and its recruiting, coaching, and news; experimenting in the kitchen when he gets the chance, and spending time with his dog Stephy.
